Month in Review: April 2017

April went by incredibly fast for me. I’ve kept busy with movies, television shows, books, games, and family. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a highlight, plus I’ve started playing Horizon Zero Dawn, the aesthetic of which I love. I’ve also caught up with Outlander, The Handmaid’s Tale, and the surreal first episode of American Gods. I’ve not read the source material of these shows (it’s bad, I know) so they’ve been added to my overflowing to-read pile, which currently contains The Essex Serpent, Little Nothing, Goldenhand, and the most recent issues of Lightspeed and Clarkesworld.

Phew. So much media to consume, so little time.

The main endeavour this month has been the drafting of a novella for the Codex contest. We’re allowed so many pre-written words, and must submit a draft by 15 May for voting and feedback.

The characters in my novella have been hanging around in my head for a while like so much baggage; it’s a relief to get things down on paper, no matter how rough — and it is rough, let me tell you. My finished zero draft’s sitting at around 19,000 words right now, and I would hesitate to call it prose at this stage, if I’m honest. I have 2 weeks until the deadline, and I will use that time to read back through and create a more structured outline from which to write the next draft. I doubt I’ll have time to really make any changes or improvements to the zero draft before voting starts, so to any Codexians reading this: I am so sorry for putting you through this!

(At this point, I’d like to say that I’m terrified by the prospect of people reading my zero draft; I would usually never do this. But it goes to show what a great community Codex is, and what a support it has been to me. I trust the members completely, knowing that there’s no expectation and we’re all just writers mucking in together.)

So. Novella edits will probably take me through the summer — although I’d also like to dash out a few short drafts if I can, since freeing up the head space previously occupied by the novella has made room for other ideas to come rattling in — and then I’ll be tackling my behemoth of a novel from last year’s NaNoWriMo. *grimace*

In the meantime, copy-edits and proofs for my F&SF novelette ‘I Am Not I’ are complete, and I’m told it should appear in the magazine later this summer! I’ll update when I know more.

Until next time!
